시놉시스Synopsis

샌프란시스코 베이에어리어에서 관리인으로 일하던 드웨인 존슨은 2014년 발진으로 고생하게 되고 그는 이 발진이 자신이 살포하던 제초제 때문인지 의문을 갖는다. 존슨의 건강은 점점 악화되고, 그는 다국적 거대 기업인 몬산토사가 경고 라벨 부착 의무를 제대로 하지 않은 것에 대한 책임을 묻기 위해 소위 ‘다윗과 골리앗’의 법정 싸움을 시작한다. 130개 이상의 국가에서 판매되고 있는 라운드업은 글리포세이트 성분을 기반으로 하는 제초제로 40년 넘게 몬산토의 대표 상품으로 자리 잡고 있다. 과학자들은 라운드업이 환경에 미치는 영향과 발암성에 대한 우려를 제기했지만, 재력으로 무장한 몬산토의 기업 변호사와 로비스트, 마케팅 담당자들은 수많은 연구를 반박하고 연구 결과에 대해 이의를 제기했다.

Dewayne Johnson, a Bay Area groundskeeper, suffered from rashes in 2014 and wondered if they were caused by the herbicide he'd been using. As his health deteriorated, Johnson became the face of a David-and-Goliath legal battle to hold multinational agrochemical corporation Monsanto accountable for a product with allegedly misleading labelling. Roundup, which is sold in more than 130 nations, is a glyphosate-based herbicide, and has been a signature product for Monsanto for over four decades. Scientists raised concerns about its environmental impact and carcinogenic properties, but Monsanto’s deep-pocketed corporate lawyers, lobbyists and marketers deflected numerous studies and disputed the findings.
